Red Iguana has the honor of being the first restaurant to be profiled on the "eat great salt lake" blog!
Ask any local for a recommendation for great Mexican food and you are sure to be directed to the Red Iguana. A long time local
favorite, you can expect to find a crowd whenever visiting. During the lunch and evening hours expect a wait of at least 30 minutes. Best to try the off hours of late afternoon and late night.

On our latest visit we sampled a variety of items from their large menu.

  • Encurtidos - Jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and jack cheese, battered and fried. Very tasty. Seriously, is there anything that doesn't taste great deep fried? $5.30
  • Cheese and Mushroom Quesadilla - One of my favorites. Its a quesadilla. Nothing too new or exciting here, but the use of canned baby mushrooms makes this appetizer. If you don't try them here at least try adding canned mushrooms the next time you make one at home. $5.30
  • Tapatio Combination Plate - Be hungry for this one. Combo comes with one chicken, beef or cheese enchilada. A chile relleno and a beef flauta. The chicken enchilada was good. however I am not a fan of their enchilada sauce. Not bad, just not my favorite. The flauta was good as well. Consisting of beef rolled in a flour tortilla and then deep fried, it was overcooked and a little dry but still good. The chile relleno, however, was perfect! I have had universal bad luck with this dish. At most restaurants, the relleno is either bland and flavorless or the batter is soggy. No problem here. $10.15
  • Ramon's Famous Fish Tacos - Having never tried fish tacos here, i was excited to give them a try. Consisting of grilled tuna in corn tortillas with guacamole and salsa, the tacos were excellent. Light and fresh , this is a prefect summer dish. $11.25

Overall the dining experience at Red Iguana is excellent. Nothing to go crazy over, but day in and day out, the food is good and the atmosphere lively. Brave the line and allow yourself to be packed into one of their tiny dining rooms and enjoy.

Cost:$$

Very helpful and lively review. More informative and more fun than the newspaper and other reviews I have read! I recommend the moles (sauces). Ask for a sampler plate. The moles comes in many flavors and colors, not one of which was chocolate. The pumpkin mole was especially wonderful. Try a sauce, then choose a dish.
