There is sushi, cold stale and barely able to choke down sushi, picked up in the deli section of your grocery store, and then there is SUSHI. I Love Sushi downtown is definitely of the latter. I Love Sushi Restaurant and Sushi Bar offers Japanese/American Style Sushi. The American style highlighted in the numerous specialty rolls that I Love Sushi is quickly becoming famous for.

Recently I had the opportunity to sit at the bar to watch and learn as executive chef/owner “Catfish”, prepared roll after roll of “if it tastes half as good as it looks” sushi. Catfish who prefers to simply go by his childhood nickname, opened I Love Sushi in April after ten years of sushi work that has brought him from Korea to Los Angeles and finally on to Utah.

Offering the traditional Japanese fare of tempura and teriyaki bowls for those not quite ready for the raw experience, I love Sushi has something for everyone. However it is the sushi that I have come for. A two piece order or sushi consisting of only simply the raw fish comes in at around $4-5. The Maki roll or what most people know as sushi, raw fish and rice wrapped in Nori, a flattened seaweed paper, vary in the range of $3-8. However if you want something special, try one of Catfish’s Specialty Rolls. Considered his premier rolls, the Spicy Crunch Roll and the Hawaiian are truly exceptional. Consisting of a garnish of Mahi (yellow fin) tuna, diced tomatoes, onions, and mango, piled atop California Rolls, the Hawaiian is a wonderful summer roll. Another great summer roll I would recommend is the Sexy Roll. A fillet of cucumber stuffed with crab. Be sure to ask for a side of spicy mayo to dip it in. The cool crunch of cucumber is awesome paired with the kick and heat of the spicy mayo.

Other Specialty Rolls not to be missed;

The 007, the Hollywood, and my favorite of all, the Tiger Roll. I will spare you the tasty details and allow you to experience them yourself.

After the sushi, allow yourself to be persuaded to wash it all down with Tempura Fried Green Tea Ice Cream. Deep fried and then drizzled with chocolate, the ice cream somehow manages to find a little room to settle no matter how full you are. So there you have it. Salt Lake's best Japanese Sushi is found on State Street from a Korean guy named Catfish. Who knew?

Looking to beat the heat and get out of the city?
A day in the mountains might be what you are in need of. Sundance ski resort is located about 15 minutes up provo canyon. Sundance is home to several wonderful restaurants ranging from the affordable to the "not so much". Today we decided to keep it on the cheep and get a lunch at the deli and take it outside and eat near the stream. Today we sampled:
  • The Hamtastic Sandwich - A great sandwich of organic ham, Swiss, spinach and tomato. Honey mustard and pesto with sliced apple. This was very good. The apple slices gave a great crunch and cool taste and paired nicely with the ham and pesto. Comes in a variety of breads. We asked for asiago but got white instead. Needless to say it disappeared anyway! A full sandwich was big enough to split. $8.00
  • Sanpellegrino Limonata - One of my favorites drinks from Italy. If you haven't tried one yet, give it a go. The sour tartness makes it very refreshing. $1.50
  • Chocolate Croissant - One of the best pane e cioccolata I have had in a long time. It must have weighed half a pound loaded with dark chocolate inside. Very good. $4.00
The Sundance Deli is a great spot to grab a bite to eat as you explore the beautiful mountains in and around the resort. Visit their web page for more info on their other restaurants and for information on Mtn. biking and other activities.

Red Iguana has the honor of being the first restaurant to be profiled on the "eat great salt lake" blog!
Ask any local for a recommendation for great Mexican food and you are sure to be directed to the Red Iguana. A long time local
favorite, you can expect to find a crowd whenever visiting. During the lunch and evening hours expect a wait of at least 30 minutes. Best to try the off hours of late afternoon and late night.

On our latest visit we sampled a variety of items from their large menu.

  • Encurtidos - Jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and jack cheese, battered and fried. Very tasty. Seriously, is there anything that doesn't taste great deep fried? $5.30
  • Cheese and Mushroom Quesadilla - One of my favorites. Its a quesadilla. Nothing too new or exciting here, but the use of canned baby mushrooms makes this appetizer. If you don't try them here at least try adding canned mushrooms the next time you make one at home. $5.30
  • Tapatio Combination Plate - Be hungry for this one. Combo comes with one chicken, beef or cheese enchilada. A chile relleno and a beef flauta. The chicken enchilada was good. however I am not a fan of their enchilada sauce. Not bad, just not my favorite. The flauta was good as well. Consisting of beef rolled in a flour tortilla and then deep fried, it was overcooked and a little dry but still good. The chile relleno, however, was perfect! I have had universal bad luck with this dish. At most restaurants, the relleno is either bland and flavorless or the batter is soggy. No problem here. $10.15
  • Ramon's Famous Fish Tacos - Having never tried fish tacos here, i was excited to give them a try. Consisting of grilled tuna in corn tortillas with guacamole and salsa, the tacos were excellent. Light and fresh , this is a prefect summer dish. $11.25

Overall the dining experience at Red Iguana is excellent. Nothing to go crazy over, but day in and day out, the food is good and the atmosphere lively. Brave the line and allow yourself to be packed into one of their tiny dining rooms and enjoy.
